PROFESSIONAL FIRE FIGHTERS

Who may purchase license plates in this category? All residents of Alabama who are vehicle owners and are paid members of a paid or part paid fire department of the state.

Is there any documentation required to be presented by the registrant prior to purchasing this plate? Yes. The Firefighters’ Personnel Standards and Education Commission will provide a list of all members of paid or part-paid fire departments on their website for the licensing officials’ offices. The registrant’s name must appear on the list in order to be eligible to receive the Professional Fire Fighter license plate. If the registrant’s name is not on the list, the registrant may present to the licensing official proof of his or her membership in a fire department by means of a certificate signed by the chief officer of the fire department on a form prescribed by the Firefighters’ Personnel Standards and Education Commission.

What registration fees are associated with the purchase of this license plate? $15.00- $105.00 depending on the type of vehicle being registered. These plates are available for motorcycles.

May the plates be personalized? No

Additional fees: $.25 annually. $5.00 when metal plate is issued.

Are plates in this category transferable? If so, to whom? The plates are not transferable between owners.

What type of vehicles may this plate be displayed upon? Private passenger automobiles, pickup trucks, motorcycles, and pleasure motor vehicles (i.e., recreational vehicles) not exceeding 12,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.

How are the net proceeds from the purchase of this plate distributed? The net proceeds of the $.25 will be distributed into a fund managed by the Alabama Joint Fire Council and shall be used for the purpose of expanding and maintaining the Alabama Firefighter Memorial located in Tuscaloosa. The net proceeds of the $5 shall be distributed to the Department of Revenue.

How often does the license plate design change? Every five (5) years.

How are these plates ordered? Plates are available at the local licensing official’s office.
